Cutting conditions search
Machining Navi

Our Machining Navi is an optional function that uses the OSP-P control and sensors to monitor chatter. When chatter is detected, the function then either recommends spindle speed changes (Machining Navi L-g and Machining Navi M-g) or automatically makes the spindle speed adjustments (Machining Navi M-i). By choosing the optimal speed(s) that allow your machine to avoid chatter, you can save operator time and maximize productivity.
Maximizing machine tool performance
Cost reduction—shorter cycle times and higher productivity—is required to compete in today’s global market. Machining Navi, with clear visuals of complex cutting conditions, is a breakthrough tool that enables the machine operator to navigate the machine and tool capabilities to their best performance levels.

Tailored approaches for different types of machine tool
Optimizing spindle speed
Especially suitable for high-speed milling applications, to effectively suppress chatter by shifting rpm’s to an optimum, and even faster chatter-free zone.

Raising the low-speed threshold— [milling and turning applications]
Increasing milling or turning spindle speeds in the slow zone requires a different approach to suppress chatter. Okuma’s solution provides a wider stable region for faster cutting in the low-speed zone.

Find the best cutting condition for your application
Four types of Machining Navi easily guide customers
- Simple, auto-mode—leave it to the machine Finding optimum cutting conditions quickly
Machining Navi M-i (intelligently optimized spindle speed control)
Chatter vibration is measured by built-in sensors, and spindle speed is automatically changed to the optimum speed. In addition, advanced graphics of the optimal cutting conditions represent effective alternatives to suppress various chatter characteristics throughout the low to high speed zones.
- Adjust cutting conditions while monitoring the data
Machining Navi M-gII (guided optimization of spindle speed)
Machining Navi M-gII+ (guided optimization of spindle speed/harmonic control)
Machining Navi M-g displays suggestions for the best spindle speed from chatter noise picked up by the microphone. The effect can be quickly checked by selecting one of the suggested spindle speeds with a single touch.
M-g +, which is available for machines with built-in spindles, controls chatter by changing the spindle speed during machining at low speeds.
- Chatter-free applications for lathes
Machining Navi L-g (guided, harmonic spindle speed control)
Chatter in a lathe can be suppressed by changing spindle speeds to the ideal amplitude and wave cycle.
- Threading chatter can be easily controlled by anyone
Machining Navi T-g (threading)
In the threading cycle, chatter during threading is controlled through appropriate change of the spindle speed in each pass.
Machining Navi M-i
Cutting condition search function for milling (intelligently optimized spindle speed control)
Simple, auto-mode—leave it to the machine
Chatter vibration is measured by built-in sensors, and Machining Navi automatically changes spindle speed to the optimum speed. In other words, vibration measurement, optimum spindle speed calculations and spindle speed adjustments are then made automatically.

Three easy steps
Machining Navi-i functions very simply. Just three steps are required to get the best cutting conditions.

Changes made during “learning mode” are stored automatically
Machining Navi-i will automatically use the selected optimum spindle speed. Under similar conditions, the same original S command will be replaced by the “learned” spindle speed.

Finding the best cutting conditions quickly

Advanced graphics of the optimal cutting conditions represent effective alternatives to suppress various chatter characteristics throughout the low to high speed zones. In addition to Auto Control, this can be used as a tool to raise cutting conditions even further.

Effective measures are displayed
Sensors built in to the machine detect and analyze machining chatter. Machining Navi then navigates to the effective measures in a wide range of spindle speeds, from low to high.
Machining Navi M-gII
Cutting condition search function for milling
Adjust cutting conditions while monitoring the data
Based on the chatter noise captured by the microphone, Machining Navi displays a number of optimal spindle speed possibilities on the screen. The operator can change to the indicated spindle speed with a single touch and immediately confirm the result.

Machining Navi M-gII+
Cutting condition search function for milling (guided optimization of spindle speed/harmonic control)
Această metodă este eficientă la vibrații joase, și este implementată în frezare pe centrele de prelucrare tip dublă coloană, respectiv în alezare la mașinile cu arbore principal integrat.
Machining Navi L-g
Cutting condition search function for turning (guided, harmonic spindle speed control)
Chatter in a lathe can be suppressed by changing spindle speeds to the ideal amplitude and wave cycle—without decreasing spindle speed.

Chatter control effect is seen as harmonic amplitude increases and harmonic period becomes shorter. When chatter remains with the recommended values, or when further improvement in machined surface quality is desired, harmonic amplitude and harmonic period can be adjusted by simply pressing the arrow key while watching the machining noise and size of spindle load displayed in a graph.

Machining Navi T-g
Cutting condition search in threading
Threading productivity is improved while costs are kept down
When chatter occurs in threading, general methods to resolve the problem have been to either lower cutting conditions at the expense of productivity, or to use special chatter-resistant tools at some cost. Machining Navi T-g (threading) provides optimum control, increasing or decreasing spindle speed on each pass to inhibit the periodic vibrations that are a cause of chatter.

Threading chatter can be quickly and easily controlled by anyone
With Machining Navi T-g (threading), a change to the best cutting conditions is made in 3 simple steps. Current and recommended threading conditions are shown on a visual graphics screen for navigation to chatterless threading.

Threading conditions visualized and optimized
Current and optimum cutting conditions, the spindle speed change (%) per threading pass, the current/total pass count, and other required information are all tabulated.
Optimum cutting conditions from touch screen operation
The only operation required is to press the RECOMND VALUE button. The recommended spindle speed (SS %) is automatically calculated from the base speed.
By pressing the ADJUST ON/OFF button, automatic spindle speed change starts. Simply touch input the new (chatterless) cutting conditions to revise the part program.
No threading phase error
Threading phase error occurs if the spindle speed is changed during threading, but there is no error with Machining Navi T-g; another benefit of synchronized spindle speed technology from Okuma — Your Single Source for Machine & Control.
